An end to end affair

A late winner from West Didsbury’s Callum Jones proved to be a tough end to an exciting affair as Irlam went down 3-2, effectively sealing West Didsbury’s promotion to the Premier League at the first attempt.

The game started with a fast pace from both teams and there were early chances at either end, but after only six minutes Ryan McGreevy showing his pace for Irlam, beat two men and slotting an inch perfect through ball to find Jordan Icely out wide on the right, the Irlam winger crossing the ball accurately for Irlam no9 Adam Campbell who rose well to head the ball past the Didsbury keeper and open the scoring.

The early goal sparked a reaction from the home side, with Irlam keeper Jamie Brewer commanding his area both verbally and physically, making a number of significant saves during an intense period of pressure.

However, as the pressure mounted on Irlam a loose ball in midfield saw West Didsbury break quickly down the left, a decent cross finding the Didsbury’s Lewis Schofield who struck the ball well from the edge of the box to find the roof of the net and draw the scores level.

Irlam soon began to gain possession, breaking quickly and winning vital battles in the centre of the park, making the gap between the two teams in the league hard to justify, but on the stroke of half time West Didsbury showed why they are top of the table, winning possession and breaking through midfield to push the play to the edge of Irlam’s eighteen yard box where Tre Baldwin Lewis stepped up for the home side to slot the ball home for Didsbury’s second to go in for half time Irlam trailing 2-1.

After changes at half time by Irlam Manager Steve Nixon who recognised Irlam’s potential to go and get something from this game some tactical changes were made.

After the break Irlam came out looking the better team. Irlams defence played a more man to man role which enabled Alex Barlow and Scott Mason both full backs to get forward more. Irlam controlled the game showing excellent composure and patience through the second half.

With both teams playing some excellent football, the game remained a tight affair, until the 70th minute when Irlam’s persistence saw them back in the game, Jordan Icely coolly finding the home sides net with an unorthodox header that nestled into the corner of the goal to make it all square with the game entering its final phase.

Irlam continued to look the better team and took the game to Didsbury hoping to finish them off. Strong tackling from Jordan Smith, Burgess and Lynch helped to dominate the game whilst club Captain Steve Mills held a strong defence.

With the game entering its final 5 minutes, thoughts of a draw in this fixture were to come to nothing, and Irlam’s domination of the second period cruelly came to nothing, as a corner late in the game saw Didsbury throw everyone into the area including the keeper, the cross ricocheting around in the box before landing at the feet of Jones, the Didsbury forward steering his shot through a sea of bodies to claim an amazing victory right at the death, which proved to be a promotion winning result for the home side.
